(Math.) For a pair of operators (or matrices) A and B, the commutator is defined as:

[A,B]=AB-BA.

Commutators play an important role in, for example, quantum mechanics, particularly in the Heisenberg uncertainty principle.

(Phys.) Part of an electric motor or generator that connects successive segments of the rotor to the stator (or vice versa) to enable a continuous torque to be maintained (and hence current to be generated continuously).
