chloroplast

A membrane-bound organelle containing chlorophyll, found in all eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms (see the diagram). Chloroplasts are discoid in shape, and range from 5 to 10 μm in length; individual cells contain 1 to 40 of them, depending on the cell type. The chloroplast envelope consists of a double membrane, the inner layer of which forms stacks of flat ‘thylakoid’ lamellae called grana. The matrix of the chloroplast is called the stroma. The light reaction of photosynthesis occurs on the thylakoids, whereas the dark reaction occurs in the stroma.
