calomel electrode (calomel half-cell)

A standard half-cell containing calomel (mercury(I) chloride, Hg{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}Cl{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}). It is frequently used for measuring standard electrode potentials, as the half-cell with zero potential (by definition), the standard hydrogen electrode, is awkward to use. The saturated calomel electrode has a standard electrode potential of +0.246 V at 25 °C.
