benzene

C{TAG(tag=>sub)}6{TAG}H{TAG(tag=>sub)}6{TAG} The archetypal aromatic organic compound. It exists as a colourless liquid. The key feature of the benzene ring is the delocalization of the double bonds (see the diagram), which is why the older Kekulé structure does not describe the bonding so well. This ring is such a stable structure that it is almost always reformed on reaction, so the most common reaction of benzene and other aromatic compounds is electrophilic substitution.
