| Describing an organic compound containing at least one benzene ring, or one benzene ring with another nonmetal such as nitrogen substituted for a carbon atom and its attached hydrogen (a heterocyclic aromatic compound, such as pyridine). All aromatic compounds, like the archetypal benzene molecule itself, benefit from stabilization of the electronic structure of the molecule by delocalization.
