antiferromagnetism

 
   
The alignment of magnetic dipole moments on atoms or ions in a crystal (typically antiparallel moments on adjacent ions)such that the magnetic susceptibility is almost zero. Antiferromagnetism is exhibited, for example, by manganese(II) oxide. Like ferromagnets (See ferromagnetism), antiferromagnets are ordered only below a critical temperature, the Néel temperature.
