Agrobacterium tumifaciens

A bacterium infecting plants and causing ‘crown gall’ disease. Non-virulent strains of the bacterium are extensively used in the genetic engineering of plants. The bacteria carry a range of plasmids, and together the bacteria and plasmids provide a convenient natural mechanism for inserting DNA into plant cells. This is a rare example of a system for the natural transfer of genes between a bacterial plasmid and a eukaryotic genome.
