|
| An organic molecule formed from an aldehyde by replacing the C=O group with a C(OR){TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG} group, where R is any alkyl group. The archetypal example, CH{TAG(tag=>sub)}3{TAG}CH(OCH{TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}CH{TAG(tag=>sub)}3{TAG}){TAG(tag=>sub)}2{TAG}, was called acetal but is now systematically called 1,1-diethoxyethane; this is a liquid used as a solvent, in perfumes for example. Cyclic acetals, made using ethane-1,2-diol and removed using acidic hydrolysis, are used as protecting groups. |
