absorption spectroscopy

A form of spectroscopy in which the intensity of electromagnetic radiation is reduced on passing through the sample. Compare emission spectroscopy. The frequencies absorbed give rise to the absorption spectrum. For atoms the spectrum shows absorption lines, whereas for a molecule there are absorption bands. Important examples are infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance.
