absolute zero

The zero of thermodynamic temperature. A system at absolute zero has no thermal energy, thus a quantum-mechanical system is normally in its ground state. Absolute zero is not attainable in practice, though temperatures of 10{TAG(tag=>sup)}-3{TAG} K are routinely achieved in low-temperature physics, and temperatures below 10{TAG(tag=>sup)}-6{TAG} K have been reached.
